Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Removal of Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom Tooth Extraction Canley Heights
For many of us, wisdom teeth can be impacted and cannot be left untreated – often requiring removal.
The wisdom teeth or third molars are most familiar to the people when they get in their late teens or early twenties and older.
They are called wisdom teeth because they come out on ages where you get more “matured”. When they grow correctly, they’re as good as your other teeth, causing you no harm and helping you chew food properly.
But when you feel discomfort and pain, see your Canley Heights dentist immediately.
Reasons for Extracting the Wisdom Teeth
A lot of people suffer from wisdom teeth problems. Wisdom teeth may grow partially or entirely. In the case of an impacted wisdom tooth, extraction may be necessary.
A wisdom tooth should be removed because of the following reasons:
- They’re impacted
- Growth at the wrong angle
- You have a gum infection
- Trapped within the jawbone
When ignored, an impacted wisdom tooth leads to the following conditions:
- Severe pain
- Difficulty biting
- Infection and gum swelling
- Damage around the tissue of your teeth
- Development of cyst around the wisdom tooth
When to See Your Dentist
Schedule an appointment to see your Canley Heights dentist if your wisdom teeth are causing extreme pain. We’ll check your teeth and advise you whether they need to be removed.
If your Canley Heights dentist thinks you may need to have your wisdom teeth pulled, they’ll usually carry out an X-ray of your mouth. This gives us a clearer view of the position of your teeth.
As with any dental problems, it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible, rather than waiting for your regular dental check-up.
The Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure
Wisdom teeth extraction is generally performed in young adults (under the age of 25). By this time, your wisdom teeth swell, and your dentist will usually recommend you remove it.
During the wisdom tooth extraction procedure, your Canley Heights dentist or oral surgeon will do the following:
- Cut through your gum tissue, exposing the tooth and bone
- Take out the portion of bone that blocks entry to the tooth root
- Divide the tooth into sections if it’s easier to remove in smaller pieces
- Take out the tooth
- Cleaning the site of the pulled tooth of any debris from the tooth or the bone
- Stitch the wound to promote healing
- Place gauze on the site to help control bleeding and to help a blood clot form
After Surgery Care
Patients who have undergone wisdom teeth extraction surgery typically recover after a week without any difficulties. The healing period will depend on the complexity of the process, the anaesthesia used, your diet, and preventive measures for complications.
Keep your head elevated for the first three days within the extraction. Never let your head tilt below your heart. Always remember that the site is a wound in your jaw, and it needs healing. Use pillows to elevate your head when lying down on your bed.
